Guess who got a new car seat!!! You guessed it – the kitties!!! Part of this is because I was reading online about pets who became bullets who flew threw the windshield in accidents, the other part is because I am slightly a crazy cat mom. The best benefit though is that it keeps all the nervous shedding and accidently bathroom breaks confined and off my car seats.
Pothole is a great passenger, she does fine even without a car seat so this was more of a test of the seat itself. I hope that the other cats do just as well in it. Although I have an image of Brutus jumping out of the seat and hanging over the front by his harness…..
In other news, we got the update to the Tesla with auto-pilot. The car seriously drives itself now!!! It steers and changes lanes and stops and goes. Its amazing, and scary, but mostly amazing. Here is a video of the car set on cruise on the highway following the cars in front of it. I then activate the turn signal so the car changes lanes on its own. so cool.
Its that time of year when the leaves are changing colors and I was really excited to ride today to see it. It was a beautiful ride!!
I also did a bit of exploring and took a new way home. It wasn’t as nice since it was mostly along the road but the trail did go farther west so I am excited to explore that in the future. While on the way home I passed this adorable church. I think its very cute with it’s princess turrets.
Overall a little slower today – a bit because I was exploring, a bit cause I haven’t ridden in a while, and a bit cause I got new biking pants. They are very warm (they are my winter pants) but they were also a bit tight so it was weird to get used to.
I participate in the RedditGifts Gift Exchange periodically. This time around I got matched with the most amazing “secret santa” who not only scoured this very blog for inspiration but then hand drew me a wonderful picture of all 5 of my cats!!
I think she did a great job of capturing their personalities, even including Brutus’ blep! They are surrounded by a purple blanket which happens to be my favorite color. It came all framed and matted so I could hang it right away!
She really went above and beyond to make this a great exchange and I am proud to display this work of art in my family room. If you want to check out more of her stuff, please check out her website!!
A couple weeks ago Luna spent a wonderful Sunday out on the screen porch on a pillow with a heated cat bed on it in the sun. It was 94 degrees out. The next day Luna was very lethargic and spent most of the day inside on a heated pad. The day after that she stopped eating so we went to the vet. Turns out she had Heat Stroke.
Yes you heard that correctly – my cat spent too much time on a heated pad in the sun and didn’t get up or move all day so she got heat stroke. In my 36 years of living with and owning cats I have never heard of this happening before. The vet told us that she would just get better but that we should unplug all heated beds in the house so she wouldn’t be tempted to continue to lay on them. (we have a lot)
The other cats were not happy with this decision and Luna wasn’t a fan either – so enemy lines were crossed and Winzig agreed to snuggle with Luna. If only to keep warm in the frigid 80 degree weather.
Luna didn’t make the recovery we expected so she had to go back to the vet. This time she had a liver infection. The Vet speculates that the heat stroke lowered her immune system which allowed the infection to take hold so then she was on Clavamox. She wasn’t as terrible to dose as I had expected, better than most of the other cats. She finished her last dose a little over a week ago and since they has been back to her normal mischievous self.
Luna is a smart cat, but in a way different from my other cats. She has so many habits and mannerisms that I have never experienced before in a cat. I’m not saying she is special – who am I kidding, of course I am! 🙂
For example, Luna is what we call a “Chomper”. She really likes to use her teeth, regardless of what she is doing. Playing, fighting, eating, snuggling – it always involves teeth.
All this box chomping was done by Luna. Brutus really likes it because after she rips off a piece of cardboard and spits it out, he chases it around the house.
Another example is her obsession with fur and feather toys. She has these little rabbit fur pieces she loves to carry around and of course she love Da’Bird. However with 2 kittens the feathers wear out pretty fast (and start to stink but that is another story) so I throw them out.
Luna find them in the garbage, pulls them out, then carries them around with a self satisfied look on her face. Once she has them, she chomps on the base part and crunches the feathers until its a slimy mushy mess. Then she leave it for me to step on.
But I think her most clever thing to date is the “heat vortex” (patent pending!). Its obviously cold and kitties like to be as warm as possible. So Luna positioned herself over a vent, but under one of our drapes. You can see in the picture she is actually between the front and back fabric of the drape so she is surrounded, forcing the heat up, over and around her.
I keep a glass for water in the bathroom and I usually keep it filled because the cats like to drink from it. Normally I empty and refill it before I use it but sometimes I lazy or just need a small sip so I drink after the cats.
The Other finds this disgusting. I told him it gives me power, and if he truly wanted to be part of the family he would drink from it too. Drink from the cup of life and become one of us! one of us! one of us!
So the Burmeses was changed to Burmeseys to Meseys and now they are just “The Measels”. Their antics are something of legend and every day I am amazed at what they get into together.
I can’t believe I have at least 18 more years of this!!!!
Both kept going on the counter so they got put in their “shame outfits”. I found them upstairs, sharing this heated mat, and pouting.
Here they are both passed out after running around the house like crazy chasing this catnip “joint” (canvas stuffed with catnip to look like a joint). And to think they were so close to victory!
And of course this post wouldn’t be complete without a picture of The Measels in front of a fire.
You might be thinking “these pictures are so cute, they are so well behaved” Well feast your eyes on this:
Yes Brutus is trying to chew the keys off the keyboard. Then gets frustrated and attacks Luna when he can’t. /sigh
Brutus comes down into the basement with me while I ship orders. He is the only cat allowed down there because although he explores he pretty much stays close to me, follows me around, and comes when called.
Which is why last week when I called for him and he didn’t appear it was a bit worrying. Now logically I knew he was probably just hiding but our basement is pretty open and I can see a lot. I started to get a little frantic. I would call and call and not hear any movement or crys or anything!
After getting more worried and realizing I would have to call in The Other (who would tease me about my kitty-craziness) I heard a faint cry.
Brutus?
(softly) meow.
Brutus?!
(softer) meow.
Brutus!!
(barely audible) meow.
At this point he sounds like he is in the wall and although I know logically its impossible, part of me is trying to figure out how a cat got into a solid concrete wall! I’m looking all over trying to see where he is, and just as I was heading upstairs to call down The Other I see Brutus’ eyes.
I look up just as he looks at me, I have pinpointed his location! (you can barely see him here but he is the dark mass on the top box, if I didn’t see his eyes I wouldn’t have found him)
I move the box out to get him down and he heads back into the racks. Now I can’t reach him.
I eventually climb up the racks, grab ahold, and pull him out. He’s purring as if this as been the most wonderful and fun day of his life.
