Seriously – mid November, northern Illinois, 71 degrees. I think I have died and gone to heaven!! I had both bikes out today cause the weather was so nice. I think the hammer is going to drop soon though – they are saying snow flurries on Saturday…we will see! Also – BRUTUS!
Trail Courtesy and Yielding Etiquette state who should stop for who and what to do to be polite to others on the trail. Most of the time it isn’t an issue as the trails aren’t crowded so most of the time people ignore (or never read) the rules. But with the exceptional weather recently there has been a lot more traffic on the trail so it is more important than ever to be aware of other people, cyclists and animals on the trail.
Case in point: I saw these two and their horses yesterday on the trail and they seemed fine. I still stopped and waited for them to pass (it also give me a chance to take a drink and a breather!) so I could have probably have ridden by them today with no problem. However as I rounded the corner I noticed the Bay was upset and his rider was walking. This right there let me know to stop earlier then I normally would have an wait until they passed. Sadly my fellow cyclists (no one I knew, just some randos) continued to ride by at high speed further upsetting this guy. Let me tell you – horse are big, strong animals whose “flight or fight response” usually involves kicking you as they run away. Not something I want to mess with. It cost me about 1 min to wait for these guys to pass and made the day more pleasant for everyone.
If you are riding toward a horse, stop and wait (or get the ok from the rider to continue past), if you are coming from behind, announce yourself and let them know you are passing and slow your speed. Its trail courtesy, and its common courtesy. Be polite to your fellow trail users.
More and more and more picture because I can’t get enough of these beautiful fall days. Its amazing how wonderful the weather has been. I couldn’t ask for a better Autumn season. Today I even took a longer ride (Even though its still getting dark early, regardless of the nice weather) so I could enjoy it for longer)
I was really excited to ride south today as I assume the park is beautiful with all the fall colors but alas it was not to be! All the rain recently has swollen the river and the underpass was flooded. I turned around and rode back the other way but that underpass was flooded too!!!! /sigh It was a beautiful day though – I can’t believe this is November!!!
The Other and I decided to go for a walk today! It was an amazing day! 76* and sunny with blue skies! We have had the most beautiful, mild autumn. “People” are saying this means winter is going to be a shit storm but whatever, that is for future Jilly to worry about. For now – sunshine!!!

Another great year – 250 kids stopped by to get KING-SIZED candy bars! We are officially the “king-sized” house!! It was so funny to hear people refer to us like that. Not as many repeats as previous years, which is good. Still a few, some I could have definitely called out but it was in the last half hour and I was just trying to get rid of candy at that point so I didn’t care. I don’t know. Kinda think I should said something since the kid had his jacket on backwards – it was the dumbest disguise – but if that is what he thought would work he is going have bigger problems in life 🙂
The point where Brutus was over his costume:
And the moment when Luna decided she was over her costume:
I won’t get out tomorrow because I will be trapped in the house while little ghouls and goblins run up to get king-sized candy bars!!!! Seriously – I fear what would happen if I missed trick-or-treat at this point! Its so much fun though, I love the look on their faces when they get a giant candy bar. Can’t wait!! So I got my ride in today so offset any calories from the inevitable “shrinkage” of candy that will occur tomorrow. Some always goes missing, I think its a poltergeist!

I don’t like that its getting colder but I do love fall. I love the changing leaves, the smells in the air, the foods. I even do like the colder weather as its an excuse to start a fire and get cozy! Today was a beautiful fall day and the forest is really starting to change. It was perfect riding weather too so The Other and I decided to check out a new path at a different forest preserve. We have been to Lake Carina before but I forgot (or it wasn’t built yet) that it had this awesome dock with benches I could sit on and just gaze over the lake. Very peaceful!

Thought I would be all cute and take selfies with my bicycle in front of a swampy area then Photoshop in a Sasquatch or alien in later. However as I was making sure the images came out OK I heard a loud splash into the water. My first thought was alligator (totally legitimate threat in northern Illinois in October!) so once I made sure nothing was running at me I jumped on the bike and rode away as fast as I could. Hence why I have such a good time stat today.

Cloudy fall day but perfect weather for a ride. A little cool but just the right amount for working up a sweat. The Other came with me today and it was fun to ride with someone – especially since I was more in the mood to play video games! I also got to try out my new Bionic Cycling gloves which were pretty amazing. The padding is intense but doesn’t get in the way or make you lose contact with the handlebars. This first ride I was getting used to them but I look forward to future rides where I can really see how they perform.
Fun fact – title quote is from John F Kennedy!
