The FBI recommends you cover your laptop’s webcam – is it good advice?

I read this article today and was pretty shocked at the recommendations and viewpoints of the author.  I felt it was not only fear mongering, but uninformed fear mongering (i know, what fear mongering is informed) but this was shocking in terms of the advice given.

Taping over your camera is like taping over the check engine light. You aren’t really solving the problem, just ignoring it and hoping it won’t get worse.

The article states that most of hackers get on your PC when you click on email links or website links. So maybe we need to teach kids in school a computer safety education (since it seems like kids get laptops in grade school now) like we do (or should do) with sex education. Don’t click on emails from people you don’t know, how to read email headers to make sure its coming from the right person, don’t punch the monkey, don’t send personal details/images etc.

The more prevalent technology is in society, the more infrastructure we need to support it. and that include education on how to interact with it safely

GenCon 2016

Great GenCon this year – probably the best one yet. On the day we left, we stopped at the Indiana State fair for a couple hours which was fun.  Pics for your enjoyment!

Vacation Adventures

I haven’t done one of these for a while, but here you go – obligatory vacation sandy toes picture!!  That right there is Flo Progressive Blue – are you jelly yet?

The Other and I are in Florida for our nephew’s 1st birthday.  We got him some books which I am excited about.   At this age kids get so many toys that I really enjoy passing on things like books or activities that are more unique.  Plus his Mom is an avid reader so I am sure he will grow up with a love of books!  The most favorite out of the 3 we got him was called “Little Kitten” and it was a finger puppet board book.  I highly recommend to any tiny tots in your life.

Our rental is right across from the beach which affords some nice views but also results in a lot of traffic – both foot and car.  The other night it was storming and I opened the door to get a lawnchair to put my feet upon and  one of the pedestrians called out to me. I was taken aback but apparently he was eating dinner with his wife then she left but couldn’t find her way back so he was stuck walking in the rain (there does seems to be some missing elements but oh well).  After talking to his wife on the phone and trying to give her directions to pick him up The Other and I decided to drive him home.  Afterwards we rewarded ourselves with “Good Samaritan Wendy’s” 🙂

The rest of the trip has been nice weather. I have been reading a lot and walked up and down the beach.  I have also been playing a lot of Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and the rumors are true, I am a Pokémon Master!

The Great De-Floofing of 2016

As Magritte gets older, she is becoming less interested in grooming which is resulting in mats – lots of them.  She has also become very very grumpy about being brushed so its very hard to keep up with it.  We decided to get her groomed but its hard to find a groomer that does cats.  our vet recommended a mobile groomer which turned out to be fantastic!!

They come right to the house and do everything in the van.  It took about an hour and from what they tell me Magritte did great!  The groomer was very nice and listened to what we wanted, and any concerns we had (I thought Magritte might bite since she has been so grumpy lately).  I highly recommend this service and will definitely use again, not just for Magritte but probably to wash all the other stink-kittens as well.

Before and After

Brutus on the other hand isn’t that much of a fan.   Magritte came back looking and smelling different, and now Brutus has trust issues.  Its been 3 days and he is still growling and hissing at her.  The first day was the worst – in this video he is actually growling at Luna.  He is such a drama llama.  (best viewed with sound)

Best gift exchange ever

I participate in the RedditGifts Gift Exchange periodically.  This time around I got matched with the most amazing “secret santa” who not only scoured this very blog for inspiration but then hand drew me a wonderful picture of all 5 of my cats!!

I think she did a great job of capturing their personalities, even including Brutus’ blep!  They are surrounded by a purple blanket which happens to be my favorite color.  It came all framed and matted so I could hang it right away!

She really went above and beyond to make this a great exchange and I am proud to display this work of art in my family room.  If you want to check out more of her stuff, please check out her website!!

10th ride – woohoo!!!  I was feeling great. Then around 3 miles I felt like I was gonna die!
The Other and I took a break at the 5 mile mark to enjoy the lake and the beautiful weather at Independence Grove.
The ride home was pretty easy so I must have gotten a second wind.  Bit by bit!

The Sweetest Thing!

May 30 was The Other’s and mine 5 year anniversary! That in itself is a big milestone but it comes after being together for 12 years so you are looking at a 17 year total there! Amazing!!!

We received lots of congrats from friends and extended family but those closest to us really know the way to our hearts:

Scare Tactics

Brutus comes down into the basement with me while I ship orders. He is the only cat allowed down there because although he explores he pretty much stays close to me, follows me around, and comes when called.

Which is why last week when I called for him and he didn’t appear it was a bit worrying.  Now logically I knew he was probably just hiding but our basement is pretty open and I can see a lot. I started to get a little frantic.  I would call and call and not hear any movement or crys or anything!

After getting more worried and realizing I would have to call in The Other (who would tease me about my kitty-craziness) I heard a faint cry.

Brutus?

(softly) meow.

Brutus?!

(softer) meow.

Brutus!!

(barely audible) meow.

At this point he sounds like he is in the wall and although I know logically its impossible, part of me is trying to figure out how a cat got into a solid concrete wall! I’m looking all over trying to see where he is, and just as I was heading upstairs to call down The Other I see Brutus’ eyes.

I look up just as he looks at me, I have pinpointed his location! (you can barely see him here but he is the dark mass on the top box, if I didn’t see his eyes I wouldn’t have found him)

I move the box out to get him down and he heads back into the racks.  Now I can’t reach him.

I eventually climb up the racks, grab ahold, and pull him out.  He’s purring as if this as been the most wonderful and fun day of his life.
