The FBI recommends you cover your laptop’s webcam – is it good advice?

I read this article today and was pretty shocked at the recommendations and viewpoints of the author.  I felt it was not only fear mongering, but uninformed fear mongering (i know, what fear mongering is informed) but this was shocking in terms of the advice given.

Taping over your camera is like taping over the check engine light. You aren’t really solving the problem, just ignoring it and hoping it won’t get worse.

The article states that most of hackers get on your PC when you click on email links or website links. So maybe we need to teach kids in school a computer safety education (since it seems like kids get laptops in grade school now) like we do (or should do) with sex education. Don’t click on emails from people you don’t know, how to read email headers to make sure its coming from the right person, don’t punch the monkey, don’t send personal details/images etc.

The more prevalent technology is in society, the more infrastructure we need to support it. and that include education on how to interact with it safely

Easter Baskets from Arkansas

If you didn’t know, my parents have moved to Arkansas. No one is quite sure why, but they seem happy so we just tell our friends they “moved south” and are vague about the location rather than admit to having relatives in Arkansas. (Hi Aunt Cindy!)

This is their first year there so they sent us some Easter treats.  My sister, brother and I all got the same stash although mine was the only one covered in blood:

Typical Dad – getting hurt but powering on through the pain to get the job done! Also typical that he would see nothing wrong with sending me a package covered in blood.  And before you ask how I knew it was his – it was on the inside of the package.

My brother’s response was “You must be the favorite”

My sister said “It is covered in the blood of the father”

They both think they are funny.

Besides blood, the package contained some Easter treats! But not real Easter treats, more Easter lessons in confusion.

The first is a tiny egg shaped Jesus.  I don’t know if this is better or worse than cracking open an egg expecting candy.  Regardless, I cracked with glee and my tiny egg shaped Jesus turned into a tiny egg shaped penis.

This penis/Jesus, unlike real penises/Jesuses, was filled with a candy necklace rosary.

Also included in my care package was this gem:

This is a grey egg (which let’s be honest, has to be special order. You just don’t normally have a use for a grey easter egg) in a foam backdrop that says “He has risen”.  Now I knew it was supposed to be the cave tomb where Jesus was buried but I didn’t understand the scene.  My brother then reminded my of the rock that was in front of the tomb which we think the egg is supposed to signify.  Just like in the story, Jesus wasn’t inside when we opened it up. Instead it was a sharp plastic cross with a necklace hole. I assume you can use this one on the left over string from the candy rosary once you finish eating all your sins.

Finally, the centerpiece of the whole package was some room decoration stickers.

This product expects you to decorate your room with the scene of the empty tomb, guard asleep on the job, and an angle dropping trees on him.  Also, that yellow splotch in the upper right hand corner is supposed to be a “ray of light” which is included as well.

When I finish putting it up, I will let you guys know.

Saying Goodbye

20140408_131501 - Copy

Turned in the Audi today for lease end.  I will miss that car – it was absolutely fantastic. I have never enjoyed a car as much as I did the Audi. I’ve had other luxury cars but none that were as fun to drive or got as many compliments. It may look understated but there was a lot of power – smooth power – in that car. You know they don’t just throw the 4-rings on anything…

But its time to turn a new page! There are a lot of other cars in the world and exciting advancements coming out ever day. I love cars and can’t wait to see what the next adventure brings. I am sure I will get another Audi in the future, but I don’t know if I will love it as much as this one!

A stuning episode of Cosmos

I am a bit behind on the new episodes of Cosmos and took some time to catch up this weekend.  Episode 2 is one of the best presentations of evolution, mass extinction, and life that I have seen.  It is clear, concise, and factual and (I think) a much watch.  This is the type of things we should be use to educate children.

Kitten Dreams

Last night I was feeling a bit stressed out from work so I decided to snuggled Pothole for a little bit, because, as the saying goes:

She was on my bed so I laid next to her, and the heated pad was on so I dozed off for a little bit.

And I swear, as my head laid next to hers, I DREAMED HER DREAMS!

At this point you may think I am crazy but here is what I dreamed:

  • that I was biting people with wild abandon (not mauling them, just biting as kitties do…)
  • these water glitter bouncy balls were bouncing all over and I was having a blast playing with them
  • Someone was in the kitchen pouring bags of goldfish (like you get from the petstore) on the ground.

Now you tell me those aren’t fantastical kitty dreams!!  Regardless of their source, I did feel 100 times better when I woke back up 🙂

Pothole is a cat that is made to be hugged - she is just built for squeezing!

Off The Grid

Where I will be staying

In about 36 hours from this post, I am heading off for a week long sailing trip in the Bahamas.  It is sponsored by the American Sailing Association (ASA) and hosted by Out-Island Explorers.

Here is what the brochure says:

“Spend 6 days/5 nights on the water exploring the Exuma Cays with fellow ASA Members. Earn certification in ASA’s 110 course while sailing your own 21′ Sea Pearl. Enjoy exploring caves and grottoes, stargazing, bonfires, great food and all the while improving your sailing techniques”

Which sounds great, right?  Then I got more information about the trip and read this:

Once you leave your hotel in George Town, you won’t see a bathroom, shower, or air conditioning until your night in Staniel Cay at the end of the week.

Suddenly I am not as excited to take this trip 🙂

Honestly though I am not too concerned about “roughing it”.  I have camped before, I know my way around a fire, and I have seen the cats use the litter box enough that I am pretty sure I know how to poop in the sand.  What I am most concerned about is being “off the grid”

Usually when I go on vacation I have a laptop, cell phone and access to internet. I can instantly find out what’s going on half-way around the world no matter what beach I am sitting on or check my email regardless of the timezone.

I won’t have that opportunity on this trip and even if I did I don’t know how good the reception will be in such a remote location.  I will not even be bringing my laptop. I haven’t been able to give up my cell phone and although I am going to try and keep it off I did borrow a radio from my sister that allows me to charge it via a handcrank.

What am I scared of? I’m not sure really. Maybe being out of touch? I think this is even harder since its not only no internet access but I will also be without my friends and family so I’m feeling like I’ll be completely alone.

So depending on how strong my will power is and how bad the reception is, you may or may not hear from me for the next week.  And if I don’t go native, I will definitely post pictures once I am back to civilization!

Thank you….

The holiday season for 2010 is done and I am left reflecting on something I never gave much thought before – Thank You Cards.  That’s not to say I don’t thank people for my gifts but I don’t know if I ever wrote formal notes.  I still don’t now.  More importantly, when I was younger, if someone wasn’t in the vicinity when I opened my gift, I wouldn’t say thank you at all.

I remember once when I was younger being scolded for not sending a thank you note to one of my relatives. I was told that if I didn’t start sending thank yous I would stop receiving gifts.  After that, fear of being cut off made me to be sure to thank the giver in some manner, although I still saw it as a bit of a unnecessary endeavor.

However, the older I get the more I identify with the tyrannical rule of my elders.

These last few years I have become more and more disgruntled at people who do not acknowledge the gifts I send them. I am not expecting a handwritten note or anything so formal. A text, facebook IM, phone call, email, or any of the other many means of communication would be fine.

I find it interesting that I am now annoyed by the very thing I used to do. Is it because I am older now and see the error of my ways? Is it a biological clock thing? Is it just turning into a crotchety old lady?

After sending a gift and hearing nothing back, my first concern is that you didn’t get the gift at all.  The second thought is more selfish – did you like it? Wasn’t it great?

If you didn’t like it that’s ok, but I am still hurt when I don’t hear back. I feel like you don’t like me personally. That your dislike of the gift is a mirror of what you feel toward me. I wonder if my relative felt the same way?

This isn’t just from individuals either, I have donated to many nonprofit organizations both big and small. Some will send a thank you note or email while others just ignore me. I’d like to think the money I give your cause is going to something special – even if I know logically its going into a big fund. I like to receive thank you notes detailing all the items my money will be used for or just thanking me in general for supporting the cause.

This may be selfish, and reading it back it definitely comes off that way.  I’m not looking for a gift back, all I’m really looking for is a “Got the gift, thanks!”   I think we all want to be recognized for the things we do and as much as I try to fight against it I too need that recognition.  I find it interesting that I need something so primal, and I do try to work against it. I mean, in reality I do not know the other side of the story about why thanks wasn’t sent – I am too busy focus on myself and the irrational perception that I have somehow been wronged.

In the end I realize that what I feel is irrational emotion so I don’t act on it. I will not stop sending gifts nor will I require a thank you. I think it’s important to examine our knee-jerk reactions to see how we can better ourselves.  Sometimes just looking at something under the microscope highlights just how silly it is.

But what do you guys think? Do you feel bad when you don’t get a thank you note? Does it change how you interact with those people/organization?
